Meet Your Neighbor: Katherine Sasser

Penned by Francey Petty, Mont Del Neighbor

Katherine Sasser  - Owner of Hurley House
5512 Bellaire Drive South, FW  76109
Behind the Valero Station on Bryant Irvin

I enjoyed visiting with Katherine in her cozy and homey storefront, just two minutes from Mont Del.   It is a restful place to take a friend for lunch, or pick up a take-out order for your family dinner or perhaps having some friends over.   One of the handiest details of Hurley House is the pick-up window which means we don’t even have to get out of the car in this heat!   I had to admit to her that I had never seen the well-designed space at the end of the small strip mall in back of Valero Station, even though I pass Valero Station regularly.   And perhaps many others of you are in that predicament!

It is a bakery… but more than that, Hurley House offers catering, oven-ready dinners to take home, and small events at the storefront. The business is a vision that started in her Mont Del home on Windward Road  on May 1, 2013 (having moved to Mont Del just the year before). She kept the business in her home three years before deciding to move to a retail space two years ago.    Katherine is not one of those women who loved cooking from early on; she began cooking when she got married to feed her family and for her own pleasure.  This humble beginning morphed into much more.    She came to realize she enjoyed it and that it was a sensory experience which included what we see, feel and smell and that it brought art and science together.

I can hear the pride in her voice when she relates that she makes everything from scratch, in small batches, keeping everything fresh.  She also continues to fine tune the business, learning to say “no” to certain types of foods and services (such as dietary needs), instead emphasizing the areas of food offerings that are needed by most people. There are two offerings on her take-away-menu per week:  one being an oven-ready main dish with side dish, and the other a main dish salad.   She narrows her offerings to be sure the remaining ones fit her high expectations.   Word of mouth to friends from her TCU days and other sources has been the biggest way of growing her business, along with social media.

She began by telling friends she could offer foods they needed for almost any occasion:  whether it was cupcakes or other baked goods for a party, snacks, appetizers or a complete dinner.  As the first couple of years passed, she realized it was a profession she had grown to love and was part of her life now.  The first three years she worked out of her home, managing four children (now 15, 14, 10 and almost 9 years old) along with her business.  She mentioned her husband (Timm) being a huge help with the kids from early on because much of his work could be done on the computer in their home.  He works with an international mission organization called Empower One out of Dallas, which teaches locals in various regions of the world how to pastor churches and raise money for churches and schools.  Some of his time is spent in Uganda, fulfilling many aspects of his love and concern for people who need so much.  (See Katherine’s blog for more details).

Katherine has an inviting motto:  Hurley House creates spaces for other people, either in their homes or at her storefront.  The taste and presentation of food undoubtedly changes the atmosphere of the room it permeates.

The interior of Hulsey House is inviting, homey, quiet….a home-away- from-home to relax far from the hubbub of noisy restaurants.   It is a place where you might know Katherine as a friend by now, even if you didn’t know her before.  She takes pride in making your visit a personal experience and concentrating only on you when you are the customer being waited on.  You will enjoy browsing through the web site to see information and beautiful photos.

This is truly a wonderful oasis in the desert of fast food, noisy restaurants and often uncaring servers and managements.
